Spiders Underfoot

Seen these holes in the redwood forest floor? These architectural wonders are brought to you by the California turret spider, a relative of the tarantula.

Turret spiders are endemic to coastal California and build silk-lined burrows for shelter and to catch prey. They don’t wander far from their burrows and females can live to be 16 years old.
