I’m thrilled to see Roy’s Redwoods recommended in this week’s Weekend Sherpa Hunt for Red October activities. It’s a little known redwood forest near the intersection of Sir Francis Drake Blvd and Nicasio Valley Rd in West Marin. To visit the forest, park along the roadside and enter the grove through the MCOSD gate on the eastern side of Nicasio Valley Rd.  Make your trip complete by stopping at M&G Burgers in Fairfax after your hike for some tasty crinkle cut fries!

I got to know Roy’s back in 2008 when I first started studying how climate impacts the Western sword fern in coast redwood forests up and down the state. It isn’t the biggest redwood forest you can visit, but it’s a great alternative if the crowds at Muir Woods don’t sound like your cup of tea.
